The 80% Rule to Health is Doable

The 80% Rule for Health

The 80% rule is something I learned from my aunt Ivy Chaske, from the Lakota (Sioux) Nation, cultural advisor, mother, grandmother, and a direct descendant of Tȟatȟáŋka Íyotake (Sitting Bull). I asked her once what is the secret to finding the right mate in life. She said it was the 80% rule. She said you will know when you have found the right person for you when you are happy together 80% of the time. If you are having difficulties only 20% of the time, you are on the right track to having a successful relationship. Her approach brings me sanity and calm when dealing with chronic health conditions. I use this mindset when I am feeling overwhelmed, stressed, anxious and fatigued with managing my health conditions.

Why I Practice the 80% Rule

  • It is impossible to manage all of my health conditions 100% of the time or 100% effectively, individually or simultaneously. I tried to do that in the past, which led to burnout and fatigue. It also caused me to have black and white thinking. I would either do everything perfectly or abandon any efforts to take care of my health.
  • Therefore, I aim for 80% success in the management of my Diabetes, Depression and Anxiety.
  • The 80% rule gives me breathing room and eases my anxiety. I need the mental, spiritual, emotional and physical space for the daily chores of life, spending time with family and friends, having fun, enjoying hobbies, volunteering, supporting causes and non-profit organizations, study, and work.

Of course, there are always exceptions to a rule. When it comes to my Celiac Disease, I must adhere to a 100% gluten-free diet. If I eat gluten by choice, by accident or through cross-contamination, I become very sick and risk damaging my gut and the onset of conditions and diseases caused by untreated Celiac Disease.
