External Resources to Help Manage Multiple Health Conditions
Here are helpful resource links to some websites I use on a regular basis to help me with the various aspects of chronic diseases, including medical advice, therapies, and the latest research on Diabetes, Celiac Disease, and Depression and Anxiety. I use both Canadian and American websites.
- Diabetes Links
- The Canadian Diabetes Association/Diabetes Canada
- Their mission is to lead the fight against diabetes by helping people with diabetes live healthy lives while working to find a cure. I have attended Virtual Conferences during the Covid 19 pandemic.
- diatribe Learn: Making Sense of Diabetes
- diaTribe provides free cutting-edge diabetes insights and actionable tips for people with diabetes. Their mission is to help individuals better understand their diabetes. This is my go-to website for diabetes.
- American Diabetes Association: Connected for Life
- The American Diabetes Association seeks to educate the public about diabetes and to help those affected by it through funding research to manage, cure and prevent diabetes. I like their recipes.
- Celiac Disease Links
- Canadian Celiac Association
- It serves people with celiac disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity and dermatitis herpetiformis through affiliated chapters across Canada. The CCCA helped me regain control over my life. The Manitoba Chapter provides celiac kits to local food banks.
- The National Celiac Association
- The NCA is dedicated to educating and advocating for individuals with celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivities, their families, and communities throughout the United States. They have food assistance resources, including guides to providing GF food and a searchable database of food pantries where you may be able to find GF food.
- Depression and Anxiety Links
- Mood Disorders Society of Canada
- The MDSC is a mental health organization with the goal of improving the quality of life for people affected by mood disorders. They do a lot of great work for people on the local level.
- Canadian Mental Health Association
- The CMHA provides advocacy, programs and resources that help to prevent mental health problems and illnesses, support recovery and resilience, and enable all Canadians to flourish and thrive.
- Bring Change to Mind: Let's Talk Mental Health
- To end the stigma and discrimination surrounding mental illness. It was created by the actress Glenn Close and her sister, Jessie Close, who has Bi-polar disorder.
The CCA has helped me in so many ways, including getting one-on-one help with a mentor, with whom I meet on Zoom. Not only do I get advice from someone who is also celiac, but I have also made a new friend.
I have learned a great deal from Adam, including his take on a healthy low-carb cereal. I don't go quite low in carbs. I add some safe gluten-free quick oats to my version of his Chia pudding. Yummy with wild blueberries!
If there is going to be a silver lining to the Covid-19 Pandemic, my hope is that it has shed light on the need to deal with mental health together with empathy and generosity. 'bring change 2 mind' is doing its part.
